Mahoe Café-Bar opened its doors for the first time in the summer of 2008.
“MAHOE”
We chose the name “Mahoe” because we thought it rang like a good-sounding name for the café-bar, but also because of the reference to the “blue mahoe”, which is a tree that is indigenous to Jamaica and grows only there, except for small quantities in Cuba.
The blue mahoe tree is strong and beautiful with a polished wood that is blue-green in hue. The table sitting in the alcove area off from the main floor in Mahoe is made of blue mahoe wood imported from Jamaica. So are the wooden platters on which we serve some of your bar snacks, sandwiches and wraps.
THE BOAT
We used a boat in our logo because (although there is also the reference to the blue mahoe tree) to us the word “Mahoe” connotes a place that is far away- overseas. It makes you dream of that place far away and itch to go there. It also reminds you of the old-time connections between the place where Mahoe is now- London- and the place where its inspiration comes from- the Caribbean, and the waters in-between; the so-called “discovery” of the Caribbean by Christopher Columbus; that whole naval history and “New World/Old World” thing. We have some pictures on the walls inside Mahoe about all this stuff and a few model boats too, including one that is supposed to be the model of the HMS Bounty, notorious boat of Captain William Bligh, the Englishman who is reputed to have first taken the breadfruit to the Caribbean (thank heavens for that too!)
So that’s why we use the boat in our logo.
